Nightlife in Phuket Town
The essence of clubbing in Phuket Town involves getting a large group of friends together, choosing a club, getting there, buying a bottle of whiskey and dancing around a table until 1 or 2 am. This is how the Thais do it and it"s an awful lot of fun. When it comes to music in Phuket Town, the majority of clubs opt for local bands playing covers of Thai indie favorites along with the occasional Western number for good measure. Bands play, people drink and everyone has a good time. Towards the end of the night, the bands take their leave and let a DJ come and smack everyone"s eardrums with hip hop or breakneck techno. By this point everyone is usually too drunk to complain.
One of the most popular clubs in Phuket Town is Timberhut, which has been around forever. The club gets extremely busy, especially on weekends, so it"s always best to arrive early and find a good spot. The band at Timberhut is particularly good, playing a slightly more refined selection of music than you might find at other venues.
Another great club, albeit a lot bigger, is KorTorMor, which is more of the same and is especially popular with the island"s student population. A lot of foreigners also find their way to KorTorMor.
One place worth mentioning is Oasis, which is a tidy little venue that most tourists don"t find, making it feel more homely than KorTorMor and Timberhut. The music policy is standard, but it"s a great club and certainly worth checking out.
For something a little left of the field, Music Matters is Phuket Town"s premier jazz club primarily frequented by expats and travelers in the know. The club is more of an open-air bar hidden down a soi, with a live band playing some nights and CDs the rest of the time. For a quiet drink in Phuket Town, nothing quite beats Music Matters.
Phuket Town also has a number of go-go bars, beer bars and brothels, but a Western male turning up at these could raise eyebrows. Patong is just a short ride away if you feel the urge to prowl for Thai bar girls.
